What Is OEKO-TEX Certification and Why It Matters for Silk Products

You'll see "OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 Certified" on every Soreia product. But what does it actually mean — and why should it matter when you're buying silk sleep accessories?

What Is OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100?

OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is an independent certification system for textile products, administered by the OEKO-TEX Association — a consortium of 18 independent research and testing institutes across Europe and Japan. It's one of the most rigorous and widely recognized textile safety certifications in the world.

The certification tests every component of a finished textile product — not just the outer fabric, but also threads, linings, buttons, zippers, dyes, and finishing chemicals — against a list of over 100 harmful substances.

What Does OEKO-TEX Test For?

  • Heavy metals (lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury)
  • Formaldehyde
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Allergenic and carcinogenic dyes
  • pH value (skin-safe range)
  • Color fastness (to prevent dye transfer onto skin)
  • Flame retardants
  • Phthalates and other plasticizers

The limits applied are stricter than most national regulations — and for products in direct skin contact (like pillowcases, sleep masks, and bonnets), the standards are even more stringent.

Why It Matters for Silk Sleep Accessories

Silk sleep accessories are in contact with your skin and hair for 7–8 hours every night. The eye area — covered by a sleep mask — has some of the thinnest, most permeable skin on the body. Your scalp, covered by a bonnet, is also highly absorbent.

Without certification, you have no way of knowing whether the dyes used to color a silk product are safe for prolonged skin contact, whether the finishing chemicals used to make silk feel soft will transfer onto your skin overnight, or whether the fabric has been treated with pesticides or formaldehyde during processing.

OEKO-TEX certification removes this uncertainty. Every Soreia product — from the Silk Pillowcase to the Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask and the Silk Sleep Bundle — has been independently tested and verified to be free from all substances on the OEKO-TEX harmful substances list.

This is especially important for sensitive, reactive, or acne-prone skin. Read more: Best Silk Pillowcase for Sensitive Skin: What to Look For.

How to Verify a Product Is Certified

Every genuine OEKO-TEX certified product comes with a unique certification number. You can verify any certification at oeko-tex.com/certificate by entering the number. This is the only way to confirm a certification is real — not just a logo on a product page.

OEKO-TEX vs "Organic" Claims

"Organic silk" refers to how the silk was produced — without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers in the mulberry cultivation process. OEKO-TEX certification tests the finished product for harmful substances, regardless of how the raw material was grown.

Both matter. Soreia uses organic mulberry silk and OEKO-TEX certified finished products — meaning the silk is cleaner at the source and verified safe in its final form.

Why Soreia Prioritizes Certification

Most silk brands don't pursue OEKO-TEX certification because it adds cost and requires ongoing audits. Soreia pursues it because what touches your skin and hair for 7–8 hours every night should meet the highest independently verified safety standard available — not just the brand's own claims.

We don't have tens of thousands of reviews. We don't manufacture in volume to hit a price point. What we have is a specification — 22 momme, Grade 6A, OEKO-TEX certified — that we're willing to put our name on, every product, every time. Trust is built on transparency. Ours is in the specification.

The Bottom Line

For any textile that spends 7–8 hours in contact with your skin every night, OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification is the most meaningful safety signal available. It's not a marketing claim — it's an independently verified, regularly audited standard that confirms what you're sleeping in is safe.
